Then, the Martian extended his long arm across the table, placing a hand upon my shoulder reassuringly. “Take heart, Lamont. It won’t always be like this.”
Interesting shift to first-person perspective for this one. More intriguing is the shift back to third person for the epilogue. Took a minute to reorient while reading. Not in a bad way. I encourage more first-person installments from a number of our cast members. Seeing what these characters think of themselves and their own internal impressions of the circumstances around them would make for challenging and innovative storytelling. I'm thinking how the exact same scene might be described, one day after another, through multiple eyes and agendas. The old saying, no one thinks they are the villain in their own story - and each of us marvel at how wrong other people can be....
What do I think so far? "Great!" Rex still makes me sad though, which I guess is a testament to the quality of your fiction-craft. And I see you've made enough changes from the original narrative to keep us guessing for a long while, I'm sure. Enjoy your 'break' such as it is; we'll be anticipating your return. The title of the next chapter fires the imagination.
“In my experience, there are never really any answers. Only better questions.” - Is this the new version of "I wouldn't know an answer if I saw one Francis, I only ever found clues"?
Cause that is my favorite line ever.
On a side note, I guess I haven't posted anything in a few years, but I just want to say what a joy it is that Westward is a thing, and has been a thing for so long now, and how much I appreciate your sheer dedication to your craft E. You are one hell of an author and an artist.
